STORY SPECTRUM

Updated: Sep 25, 2020

As a producer, sometimes you're called upon to come up with creative content on the spot. This is a day to day reality for professional screenwriters, and if your aim is to be generating your own content, you should understand storytelling mechanics like the back of your hand.

PART 1 - STORY UNIVERSE - within most opening shots or sequences the audience is left with a sense of the story's setting. This is the backdrop setting of the movie and helps to establish tone, genre expectations, and any global conflicts.

PART 2 - CHARACTER INTENTIONS - once the audience knows a little about the world of the story, they are going to start connecting to characters on screen. People are naturally curious and want to know what people are after or up to in order to relate to the story. Who's the central characters and what do they want to attain.

PART 3 - OPPOSITION - now that there is a clear character with an objective, something can get in their way. This creates conflict, and conflict is key to an engaging story.

PART 4 - CHARACTER TACTICS - the audience now gets to enjoy the movie as they watch the characters explore ways to resolve conflicts that stand in their way of their intentions.

PART 5 - REBUTTLE - ultimately, with every action there is an equal and opposite reaction in a well balanced story. The stakes are raised. My favorite explanation of this section of the movie is Blake Snyder's "Bad Guys Close In", and is often literally that, traditionally resolving with a moment of death (literal or symbolic).

PART 6 - REVELATION - the central character(s) are awoken to a deeper truth that will lead them to have the insight to resolve the story.

PART 7 - RESOLVE - to wrap it all up there needs to be a clear resolution to all the intentions established in part two and what is to become of the story universe next.

All the best,

JWS
